Apprenticeships
IBEW leads the electrical industry with a completion rate of 95% for apprentices.
Apprentices are the future of our trade.
We ensure that our apprentices have the right to a well-managed, hands-on training process that progresses in a timely manner. Our dedicated educators conduct tailored classes at our state-of-the-art training facilities, ensuring apprentices receive specialized instruction.
To become a registered electrical apprentice, contact the IBEW local in the area you reside.
Registration is seamlessly handled by the IBEW, allowing apprentices to focus on their training and complete their apprenticeship efficiently and effectively, thanks to our commitment to timely progression.
How to Apply
Ongoing Support
Unlike non-union apprenticeships, IBEW locals and their ECAO contractors work together to provide apprentices with a positive experience. We support apprentices with:
Mentoring
Pre-exam courses
Pre-college preparation
Salary and benefit increases as per the collective agreement
High Completion Rates
Some non-union apprentices are used as cheap labour by contractors, and can languish for years without being allowed to progress. Many of them become discouraged and quit— the current Ontario apprenticeship completion rate for non-union skilled trades is 58%.
IBEW locals, in partnership with ECAO contractors, provide a framework for the apprenticeship process as a whole, which is why our industry-leading education program ensures a completion rate of 95% or better in Ontario.
NextGen clubs within the locals provide additional support and friendship for the younger workforce, and they are organized and run by members under the age of 35.
We encourage our apprentices to join their local group!
